ZVBM Tournaments

I am a little bit behind in my tournament blogging so I will get us all up to speed in one blog.

May 16 river tournament. – I fished decently I had the quality of fish to place better but what hurt me was not having 5 fish. I weighed in 4 for a little over 10 lbs. I think all of my fish were caught on swim jigs in darker colors. I did have 2 fish come off on me during the day both probably would have measured over the 14 inch minimum. I don’t think I have any regrets – Maybe I should have kicked Greg out of the front of his boat since he was a HOOVER in front of the boat and was hogging all the keepers (he placed 3rd) It was a good day and I learned once again that you can run anything wide open in your Champion boat as long as you trim it up and put the hammer down.

June 20th Sugar lake – This I knew was going to be a dinkathon as far as fish sizes go. I only had 3 keepers in the boat with an hour to go and then we found a magic milfoil patch in deeper water. And before you know it I was culling. However one guy managed to find them in the deeper milfoil and took 1st by nearly 6 lbs. He caught them good for this known small fish factory. I think if I had to do this one over again I would have studied maps harder and practiced more where the fish were going to be than where they were at the time when I went up and practiced. Special thanks goes out to the winner, Chuck – who sat me down and showed me what he did on all of his spots, since it is very unlikely our club is ever going there again.

July 20th Waconia – Traditionally a lake that I have liked just cause you can really find them and wack them when you do find them. However it was a little slower this year and it was windy to which made the lake fish smaller. I had the pleasure of fishing with one of the seasoned anglers of our club Mr. Dorman, who by the way has an aircraft carrier for a boat – Nearly 22 feet long I think. He had won it the previous year so my hope were high. We blanked on our first weedline and on the second weedline is where we both managed limits. However during our flurry I managed to lose one good fish probably just under 3 pounds as he came unbuttoned only half way in the net. I believe the winner used a unique style of dropshotting to win it. Ironically I had one in the boat and never picked it up the whole day. Managed 10.45 on the day which is by no means great for Waconia but isn’t terrible either. Managed a few little culls during the day but no biggies. More irony is that the big fish of the day was nearly the same size of his entire 5 fish limit on sugar the month previous. Only thing I would have done different on the day was land that decent one but again that was out of my control – and maybe thrown the dropshotJ

After Waconia I went and practiced for our next club tourney on Minnewashta. I won’t disclose much but there are some big fish in that lake!!!

As far as Angler of the Year I am in 7th so that is GREAT!!! Especially for a back boater.
